Vollwaschmittel: Wofür braucht man es und was kann man damit waschen?

Heavy-duty detergent: What is it for and what can you wash with it?

Choosing the right detergent is crucial for a clean wash result, the care of our clothes, and not least for environmental protection. In this comprehensive guide, we dedicate ourselves entirely to heavy-duty detergents, which are among the most frequently used detergents. Nevertheless, the same questions often arise directly with this term: What is heavy-duty detergent needed for anyway? What laundry can be washed with it and what cannot? And are heavy-duty detergents also environmentally friendly? We have the answers to your questions and explain everything about the properties, advantages, correct application, and ecological potential of heavy-duty detergents.

What is heavy-duty detergent?

Heavy-duty detergents are considered all-rounders among detergents. They are particularly suitable for white and heavily soiled laundry. Their composition often includes bleach and optical brighteners, which ensure that white textiles remain radiant even after repeated washing and do not turn grey. They are also effective against stains and odors.

Examples of uses

  • White towels
  • Bed linen and sheets
  • Underwear and socks
  • Cotton clothing, such as T-shirts or sweaters

What is better: Powder or liquid?

Heavy-duty detergents are available in powder or liquid form. Each form has its advantages and disadvantages, which we would like to briefly explain to you here.

Powder detergents are considered particularly effective at removing stubborn stains, especially on white laundry. Bleach and optical brighteners ensure hygienic and radiant cleaning. Powder form usually contains fewer surfactants and preservatives, which makes them the more environmentally friendly option. It is also more economical and usually easier to dose. Powder is also well suited for higher washing temperatures and is the recommended choice when germs need to be reliably removed.

Liquid detergents are characterized by their good solubility and are ideal for pre-treatment, as they can be applied directly to stains. They are particularly suitable for shorter wash programs or washes at low temperatures. However, liquid heavy-duty detergents usually do not contain bleach, which limits their cleaning performance on white laundry. In addition, they often contain more surfactants and preservatives, which worsens their environmental footprint.

How do I choose the right washing temperature with heavy-duty detergent?

For hygiene reasons, laundry is often still washed at 60°C or even higher. However, modern heavy-duty detergents are just as effective at lower temperatures between 30°C and 40°C. You should also choose the temperature according to the clothing recommendations on the label of your favorite items so that the fabrics are protected and remain beautiful for a long time. A modern heavy-duty detergent is also necessary for this, as these ensure a very good cleaning result even at low washing temperatures, regardless of the degree of soiling of your laundry. Once a month, you should run a wash cycle at 60°C or higher to reduce germs and deposits in your washing machine.

Correct dosage: Less is more

Correct dosing of heavy-duty detergent is important for the environment and for your wallet. Too much detergent harms the environment and can leave residues in your washing machine and clothes; too little leads to a weak cleaning result. The correct dosage depends on the degree of soiling, the amount of laundry, and the water hardness. Modern washing machines use less water, so less detergent is needed. Additional softeners are only necessary if your water hardness is very high and the detergent does not contain a softener.

At Joaloka, we make it easy for you: You will find the dosing instructions on the back of the product and in our online shop with information on soiling and water hardness.

Are there sustainable alternatives for heavy-duty detergents?

Choosing an environmentally friendly heavy-duty detergent protects nature and your own health. Look for biodegradable packaging, natural ingredients without chemicals, and reduced microplastics. Certificates from Ecolabel or other independent bodies can be an indicator that the product is an environmentally friendly alternative.

At Joaloka, we pay attention to all these points. Our packaging made from corn starch and kraft paper is resource-saving and biodegradable – this has been certified by TÜV AT. Our detergents contain no chemical additives and smell wonderfully natural. We keep the CO2 footprint of our products particularly small by manufacturing them in powder form with our partners in Germany. But you can do even more:

Tips for sustainable washing with heavy-duty detergent

  • Choose a low wash temperature
  • Dry laundry on the line instead of in the dryer
  • Use detergent sparingly
  • Avoid fragrances and other chemical additives
  • Recycle or compost packaging
  • Use products manufactured in Germany

Conclusion: Using heavy-duty detergent correctly

A consciously chosen heavy-duty detergent, the right washing temperature, and an adjusted dosage not only ensure clean laundry but also a smaller ecological footprint. The most important points at a glance:

  • Heavy-duty detergent is ideal for white and heavily soiled laundry
  • Prefer powder form for hygienic cleaning and a better environmental balance
  • Adjust washing temperature: rather lower than too hot
  • Dose detergent sparingly and according to water hardness
  • Prefer environmentally friendly alternatives like Joaloka

Other types of detergents such as color, delicate, or wool detergents have their place when it comes to colorful, sensitive, or special textiles. But for everyday use and especially for white laundry, an ecological heavy-duty detergent is the best choice.
